Leather Source- K98 Vintage Ammo Pouch

text goes hereAs there are many sources for vintage watch straps, one of most popular can be found right here, the German Karabiner 98 (K98) Ammo Pouch. The K98 pouch was one of the most common gear items of World War II.  Each pouch had a capacity of 30 rounds, and each soldier was issued at least one.  Pebbled leather was the primary material used in the K98 pouch.  Earlier patches are brown, but towards the end of the war the pouches were dyed black.  Maker marks are typically found on the back of the pouch. Here is what a strap can look like after using one of these pouches as its primary leather source.

Strapmaking Tool Feature- Safety Beveler

The Safety Beveler is an important tool in creating custom straps.  It is a metal tool with a curved end to prevent cutting leather too deeply. Th blade on the bottom side is the part that allows the tool to shave the leather down to an ultra thin thickness. It essentially shaves down the leather to allow the strap-maker to glue an end down and then put the groove in, punch the holes and stitch things together. Next week we will talk about a different tool of strap-making to go further into the craft.
