Grand Seiko SBGA405 Godzilla 65th Anniversary Watch Review
Posted by Daniel Luczak on 19th Apr 2020
Grand Seiko unveils this stunning Grand Seiko Godzilla 65th Anniversary Limited Edition SBGA405 watch to mark both the 20th anniversary of their successful Spring Drive movement and the 65th anniversary of the legendary Godzilla beast.
One of the many reasons Grand Seiko fans love their watches so much is their desire to celebrate and activate their Japanese roots, whether it is with a snowflake dial influenced by the snow scene on the tops of Mt. Iwate, the mountain that sits outside the windows of the factories of Grand Seiko, or the patterns and colors of the trees growing around Joboji.
The company is taking a new path with this Grand Seiko Godzilla Limited Edition and is becoming positively influenced by one of Japan’s most famous monsters. Let’s take a look at what this watch offers the audiences across the globe.
The 44.5 mm case is made of lightweight high-intensity titanium. Thanks to the brand’s renowned Zaratsu polishing and hairline finish, it is designed with thin, faceted lugs with a beautiful distortion-free look.
Due to the lugs curve and the case’s small center of gravity, you should be able to enjoy maximum comfort and safety when this limited-edition beast is resting on your hand.
A slim black sapphire bezel, painted with a 60-minute scale, Lumibrite markers, and scratch-resistant dual-curved sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating for increased legibility are also fitted in the cases.
The trademark roar and heat ray beam of Godzilla is perfectly articulated on the large, burgundy dial adorned with delicate sunray textures and stunning straight indexes and hands. The hands and markers are also Lumibrite-coated for readability in low lighting.
One of the most popular and spectacular movements, Spring Drive movements of Grand Seiko, powers each of the dial functions. This movement comes with the Calibre 9R15. This impressive automated winding motion initially emerged from the Calibre 9R65 to provide an even higher level of accuracy.
The 9R15 now offers an almost unbelievable precision of ±10 seconds a month, which roughly translates into ±0.5 seconds a day. This is much better than the precision of the 9R65 caliber, which was ±15 seconds a month (equivalent to ±1 seconds a day). Furthermore, the 9R15 has an impressive 72-hour reserve power.
To suit the dial of the 65th Anniversary Watch of Grand Seiko Godzilla, the company has offered a beautiful watch strap made of shark leather and painted with an unmissable red coating to provide the immediate feel and look of the appearance of the glowing red skin of Godzilla.
Instead of titanium, the buckle is uniquely fitted with a stainless-steel loop. However, the audiences feel that the titanium would possibly have matched well with the case stock.
