The professionals at Grand Seiko decided to offer a new method for diver watches, and the first spring drive was released in the year 1999. Since then, this technology has made significant leaps, and almost every modern chronometer uses these drives in one way or another.
Very recently, Grand Seiko announced the birth of a new movement in the Spring drive series by the name of 9RA5, and it was first introduced in SLGA001 Professional Diver's 600M. This will be a deepest-diving watch to ever come out of the house of Grand Seiko.
The Case and The Dial
The case for this watch is created from High-intensity titanium, which can easily withstand immense water pressure up to 600 meters beneath the surface. The dimensions of the case are 46.9mm (diameter) x 16.0mm (height).
The case is also quite resilient against helium interference, as divers have to worry about that when diving into deep water. All these qualities make this watch perfect for saturation diving. Moreover, the case uses a sapphire crystal as a dome. This high-clarity crystal dome keeps the display sparkling clean for maximum visibility even underwater.
The titanium used is more than 40 percent lighter than the traditionally used stainless-steel, and it is also more resilient to everyday scratches and marks.
Additionally, the power reserve indicator is at 10’o Clock (no surprise there), and it is divided into 5 different segments for a clear indication of the remaining days (5-day reserve inner movement).
When it comes to the magnificent dial of this watch, Grand Seiko decides to opt for the gorgeous Grand Seiko Blue (original) for the dial. This color is only for the limited edition version.
The Movement
As we discussed earlier, the watch uses the brand-new and self-winding movement called Spring Drive 5 Day Caliber 9RA5. With a 5-day reserve power, this movement is among the most powerful diver’s movement to date. This movement is also 0.8mm thinner than the current 9R65 caliber that the majority of Grand Seiko watches use.
It offers the dimensions of 34.0mm x 5.0mm and uses 38 jewels for optimal performance. Moreover, it offers a standard error of +- 10 seconds per month, which is quite amazing in terms of offered precision.
The Strap
The watch is limited edition, and only 700 of these are currently available in the market. These come with a beautiful blue silicone strap, which can be easily removed and interchanged with a strap of your own choice.
