Panerai 662 Radiomir Watch Review
Posted by Daniel Luczak on 10th Oct 2019
The Panerai 662 ties into the deep history of its brand and roots with this classic masterpiece. Instantly recognizable on the wrist, you have an exceptional timepiece that intertwines to the brands DNA with precision and authority. This watch highlights one of the brand's most historically significant and vintage watches, the Reference 6154.
A Brief History
In 1954, Panerai designed a special kind of diver watches for the Egyptian Navy. This watch, known as the reference 6154, was nick-named “Egiziano Piccolo”. The PAM 662 is an exceptional 2016 limited edition of the Panerai Reference 6154. It is known as the Radiomir 1940 3 Days PAM 662.
The Gorgeous Dial
Many details of the dial have been appropriated from the vintage model, reference 6154. The brown tropical Arabic dial is decorated with gilded pencil hands and engraved lettering. The dial is painted with Super luminova and is different from other Panerai “sandwich” dials.
The words “RADIOMIR” and “PANERAI” are engraved in white into the dial. The hour and minute hands (gold in color) move on the dial with 12, 3, 6 and 9-hour numerals.
The stainless steel case has a diameter of 47mm and has got a large size just like the vintage watch. The case shape is known as the Radiomir 1940. The height of the case is 55.5mm, and the thickness of the case is 16.5mm.
Resembling the vintage 6154, PAM 662 has got a knurled crown guard with the OP logo. Moreover, the robust and powerful Plexiglass crystal has replaced the regular sapphire crystal. The plexiglass crystal sits higher up from the bezel.
It has the Panerai’s patented in-house manually wound movement, P3000. The P3000 has twin bridges for the gear train, instead of the single bridge from before. Featuring a free-sprung balance wheel and three quarter plate layout, it beats at 21,600 alternations/hour and has a power reserve of 3 days (72 hours).
The watch comes with a dark brown leather strap, and the stitching color matches the dial markers. In other words, the strap complements the many dial-in ways. Moreover, the strap sits gently around the wrists and is quite comfortable as opposed to the other modern straps in the market nowadays.
This limited edition of Panerai costs around $9,800 US Dollars. Only 1000 units of this edition have been produced. This is precisely the reason this version is quite accessible and sought-after in the watch lovers' community around the globe.
Our Final Thoughts
Overall, PAM 662 looks like a fantastic watch, and Panerai has done an excellent job in producing a watch that is identical to its vintage predecessor in so many ways.
In other words, it is the modern iteration of the “Egiziano Piccolo” or Reference 6154. It sits nicely on the wrist and stands out among all. With only 1000 units produced, Panerai collectors would have already placed their orders to get their hands on it.
