The America's Cup has a great deal of history, and Panerai is one of the main sponsors. The Luna Rossa Sailing team, headed by Massimiliano Sirena, will wear the new Panerai PAM1039 watch for the first time. This watch is very special and incorporates part of the actual boat's sail into the dial of the watch.
Panerai announced their new partnership with the challenging team, Luna Rossa, for the 36th running of America's cup. They designed a small range of watches that show off the latest in high-end sailing technology. These are called the Panerai Luna Rossa Challenger Submersible.
The Case
This model sports a gorgeous Carbotech case and a crown protector with a titanium case back. The bezel is anti-clockwise rotating with a graduated scale. The back of the watch is made of titanium, and shows off the Luna Rossa Logo as well as the America's cup profile, with stunning elegance. The diameter of the watch case is 47mm, and the thickness is 16mm. It is water-resistant up to 300 meters.
The Dial + The Strap
The Panerai PAM1039 has a contrast dial with a mix of black and grey textures offering a ton of visual depth and adding to the overall bold look of the watch. The dial is dark grey in color and incorporates actual sail cloth from the Luna Rossa itself and glows beautifully with luminous hour markers/dots. In addition to this, the rotating dial also calculates the duration of the dive. The dial gives the monochromatic look and nautical touch. In terms of functionality, this timekeeper consists of a GMT function. The included strap is black in color and comes with a titanium buckle.
Movement
The watch consists of a P.0910/GMT in house movement made by Panerai. This automatic Caliber has a bidirectional rotor and two spring barrels for a power reserve of 3 days/ 72 hours but is hidden by the titanium case back.
The automatic P.9010 caliber produced in the Panerai manufacturing facility in Neuchâtel has a central hour and minute hands, the small seconds dial at 9'o clock and the date at 3'o clock. An oscillating weight operating in both directions winds the springs in the two spring barrels.
The caliber has a diameter of 13mm, and it is 6mm thick. It consists of 200 components, including 31 jewels. The balance is fixed by a bridge with twin supports and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz).
It is connected to a device that stops it as soon as the winding crown is pulled out, which enables the watch to be perfectly synchronized with a reference signal. In this caliber movement, the hours can be adjusted perfectly without interfering with the movement of the minute hand. The device directly moves only the relative hand in jumps of one hour forward or backward. The hour hand is connected to the date indicator, which helps change the time zones on the watch easily between summertime and wintertime. This is a very useful function of this caliber movement.
The Price
The price for this beautiful watch is $19,900USD, and it is available from September 2019. It is not a limited edition. However, all pieces are going to be numbered, and the production will continue until the completion of 2021 America's cup.
