Panerai 233 Watch Review

Panerai 233 Watch Review

The 1950 Panerai Luminor 8 Days GMT a.k.a. PAM 233 is one of the most robust and one of the most beautiful Panerais out there. The 233 is also a significant watch in Panerai's history because it was the first watch they ever made with an entirely in-house movement.

What Does PAM233 Offer?

The case is only 44mm in width, but it wears like a 46mm or even a 48mm due to its thickness and super domed crystal on the top. This stunning Panerai is fitted with the hand-wound Panerai caliber in-house P.2002 with an eight-day power reserve. Like other Panerais, the dial has a simple and clean design and includes a linear power reserve indicator, a second time zone, a 24-hour indicator and a date window at 3 o'clock.

The P.2002 caliber maintains close ties to the historical features of the first Panerai watches, being a manual wind movement with an 8-day power reserve. In addition to simply telling the time it has a date, there is now a GMT function that operates on a 12-hour basis with a day / night indicator, and an indicator of power reserve.

The 233 is not a small watch with a diameter of 44 mm, but the fact that it is a manual wind movement means that it is not as large as many large watches, so it is better balanced on the wrist and watch lovers find it very comfortable to wear. It retains the characteristic D-shaped crown guard which is one of a Panerai Luminor's most distinctive features, but in a case of "1950" with softer lines than the standard Luminor watches.

The high dome sapphire crystal is one of the features of this watch that watch lovers’ community absolutely loves, though. This is a feature that makes it particularly difficult for the watch to photograph, but it gives the watch something of a classic look tipping its hat to past years' vintage dive watches. This might be a problem on a larger watch, but the 233's shallow case carries it well.

Originally equipped with a black calf strap, the watch comes with a second interchangeable rubber strap and a large Panerai steel buckle. One of the most appealing attributes of a Panerai watch is the ability to swap straps and the only way you can get that ultra-rugged vintage look while wearing one.
